Key Finder Questions and Answers

How do I find the key of a song from its chords?

Type the chords into the Key Finder above. It checks all 24 major and minor keys and shows which one fits your chords best. Most songs use chords from one key, so the key with the most matches wins.

Why does my song match two keys?

Every major key has a minor key that shares the same chords. G major and E minor are a good example. Listen for the chord that feels like home. That is usually the first or last chord, and it tells you the real key.

What if one chord does not fit the key?

That is normal. Many songs borrow a chord from another key to add color. If most of your chords fit, the key is still right.

What do the Roman numerals mean?

They show where each chord sits in the key. I is the home chord. IV and V are the strong chords that pull back home. Small letters like ii and vi are minor chords.

Can I find the key of a song by ear?

Yes. Hum the note the song feels like it ends on. Then find that note on your guitar. That note is often the name of the key.

Why should I know the key of a song?

Knowing the key helps you play along, write new parts, use a capo, and change the song to fit your voice.
